Dorothy: Unconventional, Daring and rooted in rurality

Image
Cast: Sananth (Subbu), Rishikanth (Karthi), Keerthy Suresh (Dorothy) & more Music: இளையராஜா Director: Karthik Subbaraj Major Takeaways 1. A cast that has given their heart and soul to their respective roles. 2. Dorothy proves that a commercial film can be unapologetically opinionated without compromising its entertainment value. Review: Dorothy is set in the 1990s, against a backdrop of caste, violence and toxic masculinity. The story follows Karthi and Subbu, soul brothers whose lives change with the arrival of a woman named Dorothy. At its core, the film explores how human prejudices, dignity and deeply ingrained social conditioning shape the lives of individuals. Dorothy begins in quintessential Karthick Subbaraj fashion: no-nonsense dialogues and an immediate plunge into the narrative. We are introduced to a grieving Karthi, although the reason behind his grief remains unknown. From there, the film takes us back to Karthi and Subbu's childhood, where...

The Paradise — Intensity Without Impact

Image
Paradise is set in a village inhabited by Jadal (Nani) and Chemmaka (Sonali Kulkarni), who have been under the control of an upper-caste/class leader named Shikanja Malik (Mohan Babu) for many decades. Malik's rule is based on discriminatory actions, causing the oppressed people to seek out a leader capable of ending this state of affairs. A mother-son relationship is also damaged by a childhood incident, forcing Jadal and Chemmaka to face the difficulties between them. So, does the clan finally get its rights? Does the mother finally find happiness in having her son? By the time the film reaches this point, you might well have stopped caring. The film has stalwarts like Mohan Babu reduced to mere screen time presence and nothing more. BGM(s) alone make up a great protagonist; it's the antagonist that elevates any protagonist. Here, there is Vikram Malik(Raghav), who is embarrassed by everyone calling him "Malik koduku" or "Chota Malik", a motivation that ...

Modha Rathiri : Poignant, Fantastic and Hilarious

Image
Modha Rathiri begins with a simple premise, without much elaboration: a man who has absolutely no idea that he is about to get married and a woman who has only a small or no interest in the marriage are suddenly brought together on their wedding night. The result is a disorderly evening filled with family drama, awkward situations, repressed emotions and unforeseen developments, all of which are combined to form a surprisingly engaging drama. The main advantage of the film is the way it lets its characters act in a natural manner. Anishma may well be the biggest highlight of the year in K’town, having given two performances in roles that have struck a chord with the audience and thus is gradually establishing her position. In her portrayal of Muthuselvi, she has very little dialogue, yet is able to build up the whole character arc through her expressions, mannerism and silences. Her performance has a certain appeal which at once captures Selvi's interest, and when the s...

Sardar 2 – Makes Sardar Look Like a Masterpiece

Image
Major Takeaways: 1. Poor writing and poor execution of a tell tale that is boomerish to say it in the most respectful manner. 2. Although Karthi acts with sincerity, the script lets him down, together with the other members of the cast. 3. Another film that proves again P.S.Mithran is mid at best in filmmaking.   To put it up in meme language, "Ungaluku ena nga rights iruku engala inga kooti vanthu kolrathuku" sums up Sardar 2 With Sardar 2 , Sardar (played by Karthi) makes a comeback following his encounter with terrorists. He returns from China, only to rise from the dead, a development which doesn't fit well with the story. At the same time, Sardar's son Viji (also played by Karthi), who is a CIA agent, is sidelined for reasons that are kept undisclosed. He investigates Agent Walrus (Achyuth), who ends up dying after handing over a strange-looking object. This object is later discovered to be a key to a vault housing a bioweapon. Walrus was killed by a group know...

Mandaadi – A rough sea sail that drifts throughout

Image
Major Takeaways: Soori emerges as the only actor who appeared convincing amongst the cast in his role alongside a towering Sathyaraj and an impressive Suhas. Music, acting, and writing all failed to meet expectations that was laid out earlier in the film. The story centres on two clans, the Mandaadi and the Semmati. Soori portrays Muthukaali from the Mandaadi clan, while Suhas plays Saattapuli from the Semmati clan. The Semmati are a powerful clan whose desire to climb the social ladder and regain their former glory, as Puli's father claims, is clear. So, what was the reason for the power struggle? Who was Kaali? What is Mandaadi, and what exactly is the Mandaadi clan? These questions form the main focus of the plot. The film's greatest asset is Soori. He acts well in this dramatic role and is the only actor who is able to hold his own against a giant such as Sathyaraj, who is the godfather of the boating race and manages to pull off Machamuni with ease. The film begins mo...
