Bethlehem Kudumba Unit : A sweet breezy coming of age romcom
Major takeaways
- Mamitha that I fell in love with is back with this film as she has found a footing in this with the charm, quirkiness that is convincing.
- The chemistry between Nivin and Mamitha is astounding to say the least. They were natural and convincing with the roles they played.
The story is all about a guy called Justin (Nivin Pauly) who falls in love with his new neighbor Ashley (Mamitha Baiju) the moment they move to their new city. Justin is a bachelor who is in his late 30s and hates marriage very much. He is running a catering business, making short movies for his younger brother Joel (Sangeeth Pratap). He is very popular among the residents of the colony and always surrounded by his friends and family. Is the relationship successful keeping in mind their age difference of almost 13 years?
I am confident that you won't be disappointed by the Bethlehem Kudumba Unit if you're looking for a cheerful and light-hearted experience similar to the ones Girish AD had with Thanneer Mathan Dinangal, Super Sharanya, and Premalu. The director is good at picking up humour from ordinary conversations and skillfully makes use of his cast's comic timing so that even the simplest reply comes across as entirely funny. Girish succeeds in getting the group to work well together, even though I generally think that relying on references to social media as a source of humour is a sure-fire way for a film to become outdated. It is certainly enjoyable to spot all the movie references and the similarities, since the script jokingly mentions things such as Kantara's transformation scene and Hero's viral trolling moments.
There are some pleasant moments in the second half, but a number of the subplots do a bit towards disrupting the pace. Fortunately, the final revelation is dealt with in a restrained manner, preventing any melodrama and providing the romantic element with a satisfying conclusion. The scene involving Joey and the Goa sequence are funny but might have been shortened.Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is technically excellent, with Ajmal Sabu's pleasant cinematography matching well with Vishnu Vijay's catchy score, and Akash Joseph Varghese's stylish editing—particularly the climax montage—contributing to the film's appeal.
Hidden among all the entertainment is a pleasant and likeable romance that unfolds without much drama, thanks to the excellent chemistry between Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju, a factor that makes the age difference seem almost negligible. It's interesting that just a week before this, Mamitha had played another age-gap romance in Vishwanath And Sons, which was a big hit. Although Maddy is lively and full of spirit, Ashley is a typical girl next door who is confident about her own feelings but is cautious regarding her family; her attraction to Justin is more spontaneous and starts when she sees him outside her bedroom window and realises that they both love the underappreciated band The Breeders. The screenplay by Girish AD and Kiran Josey deals with this situation wonderfully, as every interaction between Ashley and Justin is endearing, particularly the car scene in which she finally manages to get Justin to return her feelings.

Regarding the performances, this is a successful show in every respect. Nivin Pauly appears to be firmly back in his pleasant zone with this film and the previous one, showing his previous flair through clever comebacks, subtle glances and a natural charm. Whenever attempts to experiment with different genres don't work, sticking to proven methods seems to suit him. Mamitha Baiju is in superb form, equaling and at times exceeding her more experienced co-star. The scene in which she confronts Justin at the wedding is especially noteworthy. The supporting cast—Suresh Krishna, Sangeeth Pratap, Roshan Shanavas, Srindaa, Shameer Khan, Meenakshi Raveendran, Shyam Mohan, Parvathy Ayyappadas, Jazar Clicks and Vettukili Prakash—are all entertaining. Vinay Forrt is also enjoyable, although his comedic performances are starting to seem a bit repetitive.
There is no doubt that this year's Onam has a clear standout: Girish AD, once again! He is back with a relatable, breezy, satisfying romcom. Mamitha is so pretty that no adjectives would be enough to describe her.
DO WATCH THE FILM IN THEATERS NEAR YOU! W Film.
